Art and Culture Plan - City of Johnston, IA
Johnston residents take pride in their city, with its tree-lined streets, beloved community events and strong school system. At the same time, they express a desire for more opportunities to connect, improved aesthetics and a stronger “sense of place.” The Johnston Art & Culture Plan is a road map for how Johnston can employ cultural programming and public art to provide residents with opportunities to connect and create memorable, joyful experiences.
The strategies in this plan revolve around the themes of the 4 essential elements: earth, wind, water and fire.
Earth - connecting to Johnston’s agricultural past and present
Wind - embracing the winds of change in the community
Water - celebrating Johnston’s abundant shorelines
Fire - building cozy, campfire-inspired places to gather
The plan builds on Johnston’s existing identity and assets, such as strong events, good schools, favorite spaces, historic institutions such as Camp Dodge, and its strong natural resources, waterways and parks.
This plan is for all Johnston residents, and can only be implemented as a community-wide effort.
